FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
RD5: RIGA RX - LATVIA
GCK Bilstein’s battle at Riga RX
Round 5 of the FIA World Rallycross Championship kicked off with bright, blue skies and dry conditions for GCK Bilstein, as crowds gathered for the first time this season for some long awaited rallycross action.
GCK Bilstein’s Anton Marklund started his race day in the first race of Q1 sandwiched between Liam Doran, Latvian Reinis Nittis and Niclas Gronholm. While dropping into p3 into the first corner and matching the race pace easily, technical issues following the first jump saw the left front drive shaft break, resulting in Marklund having to nurse the Megane around the circuit to cross the finish line in p4, putting him in p16 overall.
Anton managed to climb up the standings in the 2nd and 3rd qualifier of the day; While Q2 saw Marklund finish in p2, first corner contact between other cars held him up, losing valuable time and putting him in p15 overall.
The third qualifier of the day had Anton chase down the pack, overtaking local favourite Nitiss before taking the checkered flag. Despite this race win, some traffic through the first lap resulted in the 9th fastest qualifier time, having Marklund miss out on the semi-finals by 2 points and finishing his race day in p14.
P11 in Q1 / P9 in Q2 / P16 in Q3
“A tough day here in Riga for round 5 of the Championship. We didn’t have the start we wanted with some technical stories early on and then we just tried to fight back from there. The following qualifiers were always alongside cars with less pace and being in traffic is never easy. We managed to climb some positions in Q2 and then climbed more again in Q3, however did lose some time there as we were stuck behind Timur who had technical issues. Missing out on a spot in the semis by 2 points is really disappointing of course but we lost this one in Q1. We just need to make sure we have a better start tomorrow to fight for the final."
