GCK BILSTEIN FINISH P4 IN SEMI-FINALS IN RIGA
Day 2 of the double header event in Riga, Latvia, kicked off with clear blue skies and crisp, fresh air as Marklund lined up for the first day’s qualifier to fight back following yesterday’s P14 finish.
Facing the Hansen brothers, Baciuska and Kristoffersson in Q1, Marklund took a strategic early joker to get out of traffic following the first corner and finished in P4, putting down the 10th fastest qualifier time despite the initial hold up.
Having initially dropped into P3 in the first turn of Q2, Marklund chased down the pack and jokered in the last lap to cross the finish line in P2 behind Timerzyanov, retaining his 10th position overall. Q3 saw no change in overall standings but plenty of race action into the first turn, which Marklund held his own throughout to maintain P10 overall, securing his semi-final spot.
On row 3 in semi-final 2 following plenty of race action into turn 1 pushing through from the back, Marklund took the joker straight away and raced his way into p4 before taking the joker. He fought his way back to the pack into 5th. On lap 6, the race was red flagged and Scheider (at the time in P3) disqualified for contact with Bakkerud, resulting in a final P4 for Marklund in Riga.
P4 IN SEMI-FINAL 2
P10 in Q1 / P9 in Q2 / P11 in Q3
“We’ve been working very hard on the car this weekend and everyone on the team had to absolutely put their everything in to try and mitigate some of the niggles that already reared their heads yesterday. We started to pick up some pace in the end but it wasn’t quite strong enough. The semi-final had us finish in 4th due to Scheider’s disqualification, however, as a result of the race having been red-flagged, the previous lap’s standings stood and Andreas would’ve got the grid spot and of course was unable to so Kevin Hansen took the spot in the final ahead of me. A close call to the final but it wasn’t to be today and the priority is that Andreas is ok.”, Anton commented.
